INTEGRITY IN SCIENCE
The scientific enterprise is built on trust. Scientists have in most cases acted in ways that merit trust. However, for every area in which our society trusts scientists to act with integrity, there have been cases in which that trust has been violated, at times egregiously.

Predictably, the public exposure of such lapses has led to laws, rules and policies that define the limits of acceptable behavior for scientists. The result is the set of "hoops" through which we all must jump in order to do research. Those who wish they could do research without these obstacles should be aware of the relationship between this increasing burden of regulation and past violations of trust. If scientists want the discretion to oversee the scientific enterprise unencumbered, they must be willing to act in the common good.

Even researchers who sincerely try to carry out their work with integrity may not always be aware of all the expectations placed on them. These are the major ways in which the trust in scientists is expressed, along with links to the policies, rules, agencies and laws which now enforce that trust.
