Chairman's Welcome

The general cardiovascular fellowship is the most important training you will receive as cardiologists. No matter what your ultimate goal – clinical practice, academics, intervention, electrophysiology, heart failure, and imaging –these three years are vital to your future success.

Here at Cook County Hospital we strive to make the fellowship years as rewarding and enjoyable as possible. Our dedicated faculty provides a supportive and scholarly atmosphere in which every fellow has the opportunity to learn and achieve as much as he or she possibly can.

We offer an extremely broad and deep clinical experience, with hands-on exposure at every step. The division is a regional center to which people from the greater Chicago-land area, neighboring Indiana and Wisconsin, and even outside of the United States are referred. We are fortunate to be able to provide excellent care to a largely underserved population, which enables us to serve society and to enjoy the genuine gratitude offered to us by these patients.

Daily lectures cover the entire spectrum of cardiovascular disease. One-on-one teaching of the fellows by the attending staff occurs continuously on each rotation: on the CCU and consult services, in the noninvasive labs, and during diagnostic and interventional lab procedures.

Our close relationship with Rush University Medical Center adds to our training program in numerous ways. A joint cardiology conference is held every week, and our fellows each spend several months on rotations at Rush, while every Rush fellow also spends clinical rotations at our institution. The chance to work with other excellent cardiologists and in another healthcare system is an invaluable opportunity for our fellows.

Our fellows also play a role in shaping the future of cardiovascular medicine by contributing to our institution’s participation in numerous multicenter clinical trials, and by performing individual research projects.

We are very proud of our program at Cook County Hospital, and we are extremely proud of our fellows. I hope that you will consider joining us here. We look forward to meeting you and to working with you.

Sincerely,
Russell F. Kelly, MD.
Division Chairman.
